You have two quotes on your desk. One freelancer offered to build your website for ₹25,000. An agency quoted ₹2,00,000 for what sounds like the same brief. One of them may be drastically wrong — but you cannot tell which without reading both properly. The Real Reason Two Quotes Are ₹1,75,000 Apart

  • Static website (₹15,000–₹60,000): Every page is a fixed HTML file served directly to the visitor. Content does not change unless a developer edits the file and redeploys. Most vendors give you a summary number. Your job is to get the line items out of them before you pay a deposit.

  2. What CMS is being used, and can you walk me through how I update content after launch? Ask them to demonstrate the editing experience. If they cannot show you how to publish a blog post independently, the CMS either does not exist or is not properly configured.
  3. What does mobile responsive mean in your quote? Minimum acceptable: the site renders without breaking on mobile. Best: tested across multiple device profiles and passing Google's mobile usability audit.
  4. What specific SEO deliverables are included? Ask for the list: title and meta tags, schema markup (JSON-LD), XML sitemap, robots.txt, canonical tags, Open Graph tags, Core Web Vitals audit. "SEO-friendly build" without a deliverable list means you will discover what was omitted after you try to rank.
  5. What is the support period after launch, and what does it cover? A specific number of days, a defined scope (bug fixes, browser compatibility issues, content tweaks), and a process for requesting support. "We will be available" is not a support commitment.
  6. Who owns the code and the hosting account at project end? You should own the code. The repository should be transferred to an account you control. Any arrangement where the developer retains access should have clear exit terms in writing.

Red Flags in a Low-Cost Quote

A low quote is not automatically a bad quote. But these specific patterns are worth investigating carefully before you pay anything.

  • No itemisation — just a total: "Complete website for ₹18,000" with no breakdown. Ask for scope itemisation. A professional developer should provide it without resistance.
  • Unlimited revisions: In a fixed-price quote, this phrase reflects either inexperience or a revision scope so narrow as to exclude most things you would actually want to change. Get the revision scope in writing.
  • One-week delivery for a business website: A properly designed and built business website takes a minimum of 3–6 weeks. A one-week delivery is a template swap, a partially completed project, or a site that will require significant rework immediately after launch.
  • Hosting locked to the developer's infrastructure: Ask explicitly: what happens to the site if you stop paying, and what is the migration process?
  • A portfolio that does not match the quoted scope: If you are quoted ₹3,00,000 for a custom application and the developer's portfolio shows only template-based brochure sites, ask for live URLs of comparable projects.
  • No written contract: Every legitimate developer at any price point should provide a written agreement covering deliverables, timeline, payment milestones, ownership of assets, and support terms.
